We would like to invite you to participate in the session Spatial and temporal patterns of wildfires: models, theory, and reality (NH7.1/SSS13.58) included in the Natural Hazards and Soil System Sciences Programme, of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly EGU2018, to be held at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV) in Vienna, Austria, from 8 – 13 April.

This session welcome wildfire hazard managers, researchers, and theoreticians and it is open to all types of models, theory, empirical studies, new and innovative technologies for wildfire research, that helps to detect, monitor and understand the observed spatial and temporal patterns of wildfire variability.

We are soliciting submissions concerning all aspects of fire activity as main research topics include, but are not limited to:
• Pre-fire planning and risk management;
• Fire detection and monitoring;
• Fire factors (climate, vegetation, human, etc.);
• Fire behaviour;
• Post-fire evaluation: burned area mapping, fire severity estimation, fire damage at different temporal and spatial scales ( changes in the composition of vegetation, decrease in forests, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, alteration of landscape patterns and ecosystem functioning);
• Fire consequences;
• Post-fire vegetation recovery;
• Remote sensing and innovative technologies for wildfire.

Further details can be found in Natural Hazards session programme website, http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/ ... sion/26711. Deadline for abstract submission is 10 January 2018, 13:00 CET.

We are also pleased to inform you that we have set up a special issue entitled "Spatial and temporal patterns of wildfires: models, theory, and reality" as part of the journal NHESS. This special issue will examine models, theory, empirical studies, new and innovative technologies for wildfire research and cover the various stages of the fire from the preview of occurrence through to detection, variability, modelling, and consequences. The main purpose of this special issue will be the spatial and temporal distribution as well as the drivers of various aspects of the fire regime. Nevertheless, broad topics around wildfires (e.g. detection/remote sensing application, modelling, risk zones, burned area, and land-use-related covers) and the impact of climate change on wildfires are also encouraged. We may find detailed information in the journal website (https://www.nat-hazards-earth-syst-sci. ... ue924.html).

The special issue was inspired on the EGU fire session “Spatial and temporal patterns of wildfires: models, theory, and reality”, but submissions from all researchers working on suitable topics are welcome, even if they did not attend EGU General Assembly. Authors can submit their contributions by using the online registration form on the NHESS website: https://www.natural-hazards-and-earth-s ... cript.html.
The deadline for submission is 31 July 2018, extendable if necessary. During the registration process it is important that the correct special issue is selected.
